Peter May's transcriptions of some Newmarket wills and inventories records (required reading for Newmarket Local History)that Jeremiah Gawen rented to Thomas Pitches an alehouse called the HATCHET, on the Suffolk side of the High Street. This was around 1670's (Thomas Pitches died 1674)
This probably was another alehouse in the Rookery or thereabouts, from the inventory it was by no means a grand place. The irritating thing about so many old records, they give names and dates but very seldom exact locations.
