MOUNT

Location:- Mill Hill

Brewery or Owner:-finally Whitbread

An inn previously, "The Queen". An undated map has been found locating an inn, The Queen" at the junction of Mill Hill with Exter Road. The 1884 shows it as The Mount, with a large stable block, the 1894 map shows The Mount there as a residence. There was mention for The Sun, Newmarket in the Bury and Norwich Post in January 1770, but of course this may have been the Rising Sun in Sun Lane.

One record seen is this undated map (upper), showing the premises as where the Mount was until conversion. The 1891 census is confusing, having a publican 67 yrs old widower Charles Bendall, with his son and daughter at 1 & 2 Bath Terrace, and Thomas Erica a sporting journalist, wife and daughter at The Mount.
Prior to that, in about 1875-1883 The Mount was occupied by James Smith, an insurance agent who seems to have spent most of his time writing to the Newmarket Journal and placing regular advertisements.

When the application was made for the licence to be moved from the Albion Stores to these premises in 1952, the request for the name to be "The Queen" was refused

Planning application for change of use to public house lodged by Lacon's Brewery in 1951. Opened on 6th January 1953 with a beer only licence. Application for full on licence granted 3rd March 1953 The living accommodation for the publican was a detached house to the rear of the pub.

Put on the market in December 1992 for £125.000. Purchased by the Ormiston Trust. By 2019 the pub and house had been converted into flats.
