Brewery or Owner:-2019 - Trust Inns Ltd
Built in the "New Town" area, i.e. south of All Saints Church, around the time of the coming of the railway (1848). The street now known as
Granby Street was then Railway Street and the pub was called the Greenwich Pensioner. The exact date of the change of name to Prince of
Wales is not known, probably confused by the cavalier approach to facts by the trade directories. However, the name change seems to have
also coincided with the change of name of the street in 1869/70 to Granby Street down to the pub corner, then Lower Station Road round to the original
station, which section later became All Saints Road. The front door was on that street for many years, before being bricked up and the
front door removed to the Granby Street side. The first publican, Samuel Speechley, was in that trade in the 1841 census (the premises unknown), but both Pigot and White have him at the Wheatsheaf from 1839 to 1855. Post WW2 it had Tollemache and Cobbold tenants till 1973, then managed. Back to tenancy and changed to Grand Metropolitan in 1980's but now Trust Inns. For many years it was the H.Q. for the local Homing Pigeon Club, also the Newmarket Rock & Roll Club. |
