STAR HOTEL

Location:- High Street - Sun Lane junction

Brewery or Owner:- Greene, King

The Star Hotel seems to have survived most of its long life little changed. Stretching the length of Sun Lane, with a Tap at the Palace Street end of the yard. Various enterprises had rented out-buildings over the years. There exists a comprehensive inventory, taken by John Aves on the death of Jeremiah Gawen in 1669, which in due course I will transcibe and enter here.
The yard was a much safer route than Sun Lane on your bike, from All Saints to the High Street, if the traffic was busy
It was one of the pubs purchased, together with the Brewery from Harriet Moody in 1896. When Greene, King closed the 10 bedroom hotel in 1964 they changed it to one of their Peatling & Cawdron Wine Stores, eventually sold to Wine Rack and then to Pizza Express. The entire site was eventually redeveloped and now there are several retail outlets along Sun Lane.

One of the few hotels with a Tap. These were basically beer bars, usually at the other end of a large hotel yard. The idea seemingly was to keep the "peasants" away from the hotel guests The Star Tap became a bookmakers, and in keeping with the trend, a coffee house in the latest re-incarnation (2019)
More research is necessary on the latter years of this hotel
