One record seen suggests that it was the name of what we knew as the Carlton, some time in between being the Maids Head and becoming The Greyhound, about 1700.
Peter May's book "Newmarket Inventories 1662 to 1715" says John Funston's sister Margaret (later Mrs Edward Stafford) and his brother Henry, between them owned several properties in Newmarket, including the White Horse, The Boar's Head and the Blackbird. That was in 1680. This was found when Rachel Wood was looking for something else and she kindly forwarded it to me. Sadly still no actual location is given Repository Somerset Heritage Centre...Reference number DD/GL/189 It is of course possible that it was not licensed premises.
